Founded in 1947 by Monza born pianist Rina Sala Gallo and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, in 1970 the competition became a biennial event and is today considered among Monza’s most prestigious cultural occurrences. It will celebrate in 2016 its XXIV edition.
The Rina Sala Gallo Competition is also a moment of cultural promotion in a broad sense, and a fascinating show. Teatro Manzoni in Monza opens it doors for 10 days of music entertainment to music, in particular, piano amateurs and musicians from all Italy and abroad, who wish to discover the youngest and most talented musicians of the new generation. The competition access if free in all of its rounds, including finals and gala concerts that equal the world’s most blazoned seasons’ concerts, presenting piano marathons with big orchestras – such as, in 2014 and 2016, Milan’s laVerdi – conducted by renown batons.
The competition’s Jury features preeminent pianists with the most accredited pedigrees. Among the past edition winners, some of the pianists we now can hear in the world’s most important halls such as Angela Hewitt, Maria Perrotta, Mateusz Borowiak, Massimiliano Ferrati, Michail Lifits e Sofya Gulyak, Scipione Sangiovanni (winner in 2012), e Fiorenzo Pascalucci (winner in 2014).
